Shoulder Dystocia Risk Factors

Doctor may not be able to predict shoulder dystocia, but there are warning signs a qualified doctor should be aware of. Some factors that should be considered include:

  • A baby’s pre-birth weight
  • Short mother
  • Baby positioning
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Gestation over 40 weeks
  • Sudden weight gains
  • Long labor

Treating Erb’s Palsy

In some cases, Erb’s Palsy can heal on its own, but other children may need physical therapy or surgery, which is usually completed before a baby reaches 12 months.

Surgery on children with Erb’s Palsy is a complex operation, and it requires a qualified pediatric neurosurgeon. Even after the operation is complete, more procedures could be required.
