Tractor Rollovers

Tractor accidents are the top cause of farming injuries and fatalities. More than half (52%) of these accidents involve rollovers.

The companies that make farm tractors are aware of this problem, but they’ve made few changes to make sure tractor rollovers are prevented. Some tractors don’t have rollover bars, and these are safety features that could protect a driver in the event of a tractor rollover.

Corn Picker Accidents

Corn pickers are used when harvesting corn. When used properly, these machines separate an ear of corn from the rest of the stalk.

Since this tool has many moving parts, they are subject to malfunctions – and they must be regularly cleaned and maintained.

The most common injuries caused by corn pickers include the following:

  • Finger amputations
  • Hand amputations
  • Broken bones

Auger Accidents

Augers are used to collect and move grains. These machines have a spiral screw inside the outer tube, allowing the device to push the grain from the lower end to the upper end. These machines are usually powered by electricity, and when they’re in use, augers can be extremely dangerous. The most common auger accidents happen under these conditions:

  • Entanglement in the belt drive
  • Someone is struck by a spinning crank
  • Entanglement in the PTO drive shaft
  • Contact with power lines
  • Lacerations
  • Fractures
  • Amputations

Front End Loader Accident

Front-end loaders move heavy farming equipment and machinery. This is a leading cause of many tractor rollovers, and when they’re operated by an untrained user, they can be extremely dangerous.

In some cases, hay bales have rolled down the arm of a loader onto the operator. These bales of hay can weigh as much as 2,000lbs – and many farmers and workers have been hospitalized after being crushed by a bale of hay.

Front-end loader accidents can also result in catastrophic injuries, such as paralysis or death.

Since these machines are so dangerous, manufacturers are required to make sure front-end loaders are equipped with protection against falling objects.

Hay Baler Accidents

Hay baler pack and tie hay into bales, which can then be easily handled and moved.

According to the National Safety Council, these machines caused nearly half of all reported farm machine-related injuries in 2016.

The most common hay baler accidents include:

  • User pulled into the machine while trying to thread the baler
  • User trapped by moving parts
  • User entangled by power take off shafts that weren’t guarded
  • Being run over by a hay bailer

The companies that make hay balers have a responsibility to make sure these machines operate as safe as possible, but many safety devices are not in place, or they’re defective. These defects can cause some of the most serious farming accidents.

Skid Steer Loader

These tiny machines can haul just about anything that needs to go in hard-to-reach places. Although they’re small in size, skid steer loaders have been known to cause a number of accidents. Some of the most common skid steer loader accidents include:

  • Crushed by bucket
  • Head injuries from bucket
  • Crushed in a rollover accident
  • Run over
  • Pinned between two objects (usually the lift arm and the frame)
A skid steer loader clears the site for construction. Land work by the territory improvement. Machine for work in confined areas. Small tractor with a bucket for moving soil, turf and bulk materials.
