SAN JOSE, Calif. – You could be at risk of contracting a ‘ballooning’ bacterial illness if you visited Marisco’s Mexican seafood restaurant in California, health officials said. More than 100 people across the Golden State have been sickened by a shigella outbreak – forcing the state to shut down the restaurant in San Jose.
Investigators with the Santa Clara County Public Health Department believe the illness started with an employee at the downtown restaurant and has since cause several people to be hospitalized.
San Jose personal attorneys at The Barnes Firm said if you have suffered food poisoning from any restaurant, you may be entitled to compensation.
“When you go out for dinner, you should expect quality food that is safe to eat,” San Jose personal injury attorney Landon Vivian said. “That may not have happened in these cases, and several people are now very sick.”
The shigella bacteria can cause shigellosis, a foodborne illness that can give a person severe stomach pain and a fever. Among the worst of the effects of the vicious bacterial infection is bleeding bacteria and it is known to leave patients incapacitated.
Shigellosis is extremely contagious and doctors say it only takes a few bacteria to infect a person. The bacteria are often spread from fecal matter or dirty hands in contact with food.
California health officials are now warning anyone who believes they may have contracted the illness to avoid contact with others – especially if they work around food or children.
“Several patients are seeking compensation after they contracted this horrible illness,” Vivian said. “Shigellosis can have long-term effects and can sometimes lead to other illnesses and syndromes, which have no definitive cure.”
